Carolina Herrera was born in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, on the 8th January 1939. In 1980, she moved to New York following a successful response to an initial fashion collection, which she deemed a ‘test’, and started her fashion enterprise.
Fragrance
Herrera’s fragrance line was launched in 1988 with her first scent, Carolina Herrera, produced in collaboration with Puig, a Spanish cosmetics company. Three years later she designed Carolina Herrera for Men, her first fragrance for the male market.
The fragrance range is now divided into three main product lines: CHNY, 212, and CH. CHNY includes the original scent Carolina Herrera, which is a fresh, floral fragrance, including jasmine and tuberose. Within the CHNY line, there are also four more distinct fragrances: Herrera for Men, Herrera Aqua which is inspired by more exotic ingredients such as bamboo, Chic and Chic for Men, which contain more fruity scents of lemon, mandarin and watermelon.
The 212 product line includes 212, 212 Men, 212 Sexy, 212 Sexy Men and the limited edition fragrances Splash and Splash for Men, which are inspired by a fizzy drinks can (this is reflected in its unique packaging) and designed to be refreshing Summer scents.
CH currently has only one fragrance CH Carolina Herrera, which mixes citric and exotic fruits with spices and has a musk base.
Design Influences
Three words immediately appropriate to Herrera’s fragrances are elegance, glamour and sophistication, but there is also an underlying sense of simplicity to the fragrances that make them so appealing. The scent of jasmine in the first fragrance, Carolina Herrera, was inspired from a childhood memory of the plant outside her bedroom. In 1989, she described her inspiration as ‘everyday life and the women around me’ in an interview with Women’s Wear Daily.
Herrera’s recent fragrance range for men, 212, draws its inspiration from Herrera’s daughter, Carolina Adriana, who collaborates with her mother and works in the business. The range portrays the ideal of the perfect modern man; charming, confident and suave.
