He later trained as a designer despite the obstacles of war in the early 1940s and was able to develop his talent and turn it into the creative drive behind Givenchy.
Givenchy created his own range of clothing. He was successful and launched the face of his brand, model Bettina Graziani who became an icon for his company, best known for wearing her very own ‘Bettina Blouse’. It was not just models who adopted his clothing and accessories but famous actors and actresses such as Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the Kennedy family who wore the brand’s clothes to the John F. Kennedy funeral. The brand soon grew a reputation for combining classicism, originality, elegance, daring and modernity.
From 1952 there were many collections including the bag dress of 1955, printed textiles (Miro style) of the 1980s and the ‘Gentlemen Givenchy’ of 1973. However in 1995, John Galliano took over the company after Givenchy’s retirement and the company became part of the luxury Louis Vuitton group. The company retained its success although later in 2001 Julian Macdonald was to take a slightly different direction with the company, favouring themes of space and the gothic. This still attracted fresh interest and today the company as part of the French group is one of the best sellers.
Givenchy perfume is particularly popular today as the nostalgia of Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy attached to it attracts huge numbers. Indeed the perfume is very classic and elegant and there are several different products including Amarige, Amarige Mariage, Ange Ou Demon, Eau Torride, Hot Couture, Extravagance d’ Amariage, Organza, Indecence de Organza, My Couture and Very Irresistible, which is a fine range for women. There are almost as many for men, including, Blue Label, Gentlemen, Pi, Very Irresistible, Insense Ultramarine, Pi Fraiche and Xeryus Rouge.
