Paco Rabanne began his career designing jewellery for famous fashion houses such as Givenchy, Dior and Balenciaga. In 1966, Paco Rabanne established his own fashion house. Throughout the 1960s, he became well-known, even infamous, in fashion circles in France.
Paco Rabanne’s work is prolific. Besides designing fashion and beauty products, he has worked on film costume designs, home furnishings, exhibitions and even condominium developments.
Paco Rabanne Perfumes is owned by the Puig Beauty and Fashion Group, based in Spain. In 1999, Puig withdrew support from Paco Rabanne’s fashion label.
Concepts and Design Influences
Paco Rabanne has an interest in paranormal phenomena including the prophecies of Nostradamus. He also has an engineering mind and uses eccentric materials not normally used in fashion design such as metal, paper and plastic for his unconventional, predominantly space-age fashion designs. Science and technology has also been important influences in Paco Rabanne’s work.
