In 1931, Rochas opened his fashion house in Paris. His customers include legends such as Carole Lombard, Marlène Dietrich and Mae West. In 1936, Marcel Rochas created his first perfumes; Air Jeune, Audace and Avenue Matignon, which were sold exclusively but unfortunately withdrawn when war begun.
Many of Rochas’s perfumes were composed by Edmond Roudnitska. In 1944, Rochas signature perfume Femme was born, uniquely packaged in a pink box with black lace. It was inspired by the shape of a woman. Other early memorable Rochas perfumes include Rose, Moustache, Mousseline and Mouche, named after Rochas’ cat.
The fashion house closed after the death of Marcel Rochas in 1955. However, the perfume manufacturing continued until 1971 under the presidency of Helene Rochas.
Rochas was owned by Procter & Gamble but in July 2006, it surprisingly shut down Rochas’ fashion division. The well-respected designer Olivier Theyskens was appointed Rochas creative director in 2002. In 2006, he was awarded the coveted Council of Fashion Designers of America. Theyskens is well-known for his focus on demi-couture which are extremely costly special pieces; only affordable to the very wealthy.
The Perfumes
Rochas produced many famous and well-liked perfumes, some of which are described below.
From 1960s, Rochas perfumes were rejuvenated by Guy Robert. He created Madame Rochas for formal use. The bottle design was inspired by a discovery by Helene Rochas in a Parisian antique shop. In 1969, Guy Robert went on to develop Monsieur Rochas. Later on the perfumier Nicolas Mamounas, was taken on to develop future Rochas perfumes.
Mystere was created by Rochas in 1981. It contains notes of vanilla, musk and amber and is great for wearing in the evening. Rochas introduced the romantic Lumiere in 1984 with its blends of freesia, musk and sandalwood. In 1987, Laurent Normand from Chanel, was appointed President of Rochas and gave Olivier Crep the responsibility of re-launching Femme. In the same year, Byzance was created. It is contained in a magical cobalt blue bottle, a colour that Marcel Rochas adored. In 1993 Eau de Rochas for man was released. In 1994, Maurice Roucel created the perfume Tocade. In 1995, Byzantine was released followed by Toccadilly in 1997. Alchimie, a sharp oriental fragrance ideal for casualwear, was developed by Jacques Cavallier in 1998. In 1999, daytime Rochas Man was created with its fusion of coffee and lavender. In 2002 Aquawoman and Absolu were launched. One of Rochas’ newest fragrance is Desir de Rochas.
