In 1984, Tommy Hilfiger founded the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation. It became a public-listed company in 1992, the same year he launched his menswear collection. In 1995, Tommy Hilfiger was honoured with the coveted award of Menswear Designer of the Year, presented by the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
By 2004, the company had grown, with over 160 retail outlets globally and had revenue of almost US$2 billion.
Born into a large Irish Catholic family on March 24 1951, Tommy Hilfiger grew up in Elmira, New York. Tommy Hilfiger realised early in his life that he wanted to work in fashion. At the young age of 18 years old, he began his fashion carer in retail. Inspired by designing ‘for the people’, he soon opened his first store The People’s Palace in New York. Unfortunately, this venture failed but eventually Tommy Hilfiger managed to resurrect his company, making it into the success it is today.
Tommy Hilfiger designs a range of products from menswear, womens-wear, childrens- wear, footwear, accessories, cosmetics, fragrances, and home furnishings. Besides the American spirit, Tommy Hilfiger’s other significant inspiration include rock and roll music.
The Perfume Range
Tommy Hilfiger’s perfumes for women include Tommy, a fresh fragrance with notes of lemon, cinnamon and spearmint, launched in 1996. Another well-known fragrance is Dreaming, an alluring scent inspired by the powerful feelings of falling in love. There are feminine notes of peach, freesias and white hibiscus.
Tommy Girl is a refreshing floral fragrance, with notes of vibrant citrus fruits and spearmint. A famous Tommy Hilfiger women’s fragrance inspired by pop diva Beyonce is True Star. This exclusive fragrance attempts to capture Beyonce’s essence; it is sensual but familiar. It has a fusion of floral scents mixed with notes of warm toasted grains.
Tommy Hilfiger also has a wide range of fragrances for men. In 1995, his original Tommy Hilfiger was launched; a refreshing, spicy scent with a lavender, amber fragrance, great for daytime wear. In 1999, Freedom was released; a casual scent infused with a blend of citrus and wood. Citing music as one of his main inspirations, Tommy Hilfiger designed True Star for Men ; a fragrance inspired by sexy superstar, Enrique Iglesias.
A unisex Tommy Hilfiger fragrance is Athletics launched in 1998. Other fragrances include: Tommy Jeans, Tommy Bahama, Tommy 10, Tommy Cool, Tommy Girl Summer, Tommy T Girl and and many more memorable scents.
